Taking care of our road and motorway network primarily means road maintenance.
Since 2015 our strategy aims at enhancing the road and motorway assets we manage, including bridges and tunnels. We are always looking ahead to challenge the status quo and to develop innovative and cost effective solutions in the management and maintenance of our road infrastructure.
Our Multi-year Investment Plan (2016-2020) focuses on extraordinary maintenance works, with an approach based on a renewed vision of road management that concentrates on "planning" our activities according to specific performance targets and standardized risk scenarios.
Through a planned maintenance program we want to overcome the “logic of episodic, emergency or systematic operations” with an approach that considers each infrastructure’s characteristics and takes actions that prevent safety issues from developing and guarantee our networks comfort and efficiency.
This way of planning special maintenance works brings concrete benefits to road users, in terms of better quality and continuity of services, and to society on the whole, in terms of lower overall operation costs and the enhancement of existing assets, which - on average - are in a late phase of their life cycle.
The multiannual planning of preventive and corrective ordinary or extraordinary maintenance works integrates two fundamental aspects that are interconnected:
- knowledge about our road infrastructure and its condition
- knowledge about surrounding territories and their hydro-geological structure
To verify road conditions, we perform many activities on a regular basis, such as research, measurement and monitoring activities.
